Former President Donald Trump has been officially announced as the Republican nominee for president, securing a unanimous vote from all 1,215 delegates at the GOP convention.
The announcement was made on Monday by Eric Trump, leading the Florida delegation, with Trump’s children, Donald Trump Jr., and Tiffany Trump by his side.
Addressing the convention crowd, Eric Trump declared, “We hereby nominate every single one of [Florida’s 125 delegates] for the greatest president that’s ever lived, and that’s Donald J. Trump, hereby declaring him the Republican nominee for president of the United States of America.”
This decisive nomination follows former contender Nikki Haley’s withdrawal from the race and her subsequent release of 95 delegates, uniting the party behind Trump.
The convention atmosphere was charged with support for Trump, further solidified by his strategic selection of Sen. J.D. Vance from Ohio as his running mate.
Trump took to Truth Social to announce his vice presidential pick, stating, “After lengthy deliberation and thought, and considering the tremendous talents of many others, I have decided that the person best suited to assume the position of Vice President of the United States is Senator J.D. Vance of the Great State of Ohio.” He praised Vance’s dedication to the Constitution, the military, and his commitment to the “MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN” agenda.
J.D. Vance, aged 39, a U.S. Senator from Ohio, has quickly garnered praise from leading Republicans for his appointment.
Ohio Governor Mike DeWine highlighted Vance’s broad appeal: “J.D. is a father, military veteran, best-selling author, and has served Ohio well as our U.S. Senator,” adding that Vance brings “a new generational perspective to the ticket.”
Vance, a Middletown, Ohio native, has a track record that resonates with many Americans. His journey from a military career during the Iraq War to his academic achievements at The Ohio State University and Yale Law School, and finally his tenure in the Senate, showcases a commitment to public service and conservative values.
Former GOP primary candidate Vivek Ramaswamy praised Vance’s selection from the convention hall, citing his long-standing relationship with Vance and calling him “a real person” with “original” thoughts, crucial for challenging the establishment in Washington, D.C.
North Dakota Governor Doug Burgum, also considered a potential candidate for the vice-presidential slot, supported Trump’s choice on X (formerly Twitter), writing, “.@realdonaldtrump is the strongest leader to enter the political arena in modern American history! Today he selected @JdVance1 as his running mate, whose small-town roots and service to country make him a powerful voice for the America First Agenda.”
With this nomination, the Trump campaign seems poised to consolidate the Republican base, energize supporters for the upcoming presidential election against Joe Biden.
