Vice President Kamala Harris officially accepted the Democratic nomination for president on the final night of the Democratic National Convention.
The event, held in Chicago, marked a significant moment as Harris outlined her vision for America, while Trump immediately took to social media to criticize her speech and the policies she failed to address.
As Harris delivered her remarks, protests were unfolding outside the United Center, where the convention was being held.
Anti-Israel demonstrators, many with their faces covered, marched toward the venue, accusing the Democratic Party of funding a “genocide” against the Palestinian people. The protesters, led by activist group Healing Our Homeland, distributed flyers calling for a global “intifada” and chanted slogans such as “There is one solution, intifada revolution” and “long live the intifada.”
During her acceptance speech, Harris shared her personal story, touching on her upbringing by a single mother in a working-class neighborhood and her journey to becoming a lawyer. “To be clear, my entire career I’ve only had one client: the people,” she stated.
Harris also attempted to strike an inspirational tone, calling for unity and a move beyond the “bitterness, cynicism, and divisive battles of the past.”
However, much of her speech was directed at attacking her opponent, Donald Trump.
Harris criticized Trump for his role in the January 6 Capitol riots and his multiple felony convictions. She also took aim at conservative policy initiatives, particularly Project 2025, which she claimed represents a step backward for the country.
Trump, who was active on Truth Social during Harris’ speech, wasted no time in responding. He labeled Harris as “an unserious man” and condemned her for what he saw as glaring omissions in her speech.
“She didn’t mention China, she didn’t mention fracking, she didn’t mention Energy, she didn’t mention, meaningfully, Russia and Ukraine, she didn’t mention the big subjects of the day, that are destroying our Country,” Trump posted.
Harris also addressed international issues, expressing her support for Ukraine and calling for a ceasefire in Gaza. She labeled Hamas a terrorist group and affirmed Israel’s right to defend itself, while also backing the Palestinians’ “right to self-determination.”
This part of her speech drew immediate criticism from Trump, who posted on Truth Social, “SHE HATES ISRAEL. Wouldn’t even show up to Congress for [Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin] Netanyahu’s session!”
Trump also responded to Harris’ border bill comments, criticizing her for supporting what he called a disastrous immigration policy.
“The Border Bill is one of the worst ever written, would have allowed millions of people into our Country, and it’s only a political ploy by her! ” Trump posted. “It legalizes Illegal Immigration, and is a TOTAL DISASTER, WEAK AND INEFFECTIVE! She doesn’t need a Bill. As President, Crooked Joe and her could have just said, “CLOSE THE BORDER!” like I did – I didn’t have a Bill, I didn’t need a Bill. The Border Patrol respected me, they did their job. We had the Safest Border in Recorded History!”
Trump also criticized Harris for her stance on immigration and abortion, accusing her of spreading falsehoods about his positions. He reiterated his opposition to a nationwide abortion ban, which Harris falsely attributed to him, and blasted her for supporting what he called a disastrous border policy.
In his flurry of posts, Trump pointed to the lack of specific programs in Harris’ speech, “No specific programs, ALL TALK, NO ACTION — Why didn’t she do it three and a half years ago?
As the conventions come to a close, both candidates now prepare for the final stretch of the campaign.
The first debate between Harris and Trump is set for September 10 in Philadelphia, where the two will go head-to-head on key issues. With the race tightening, particularly in battleground states, the upcoming weeks promise to be crucial for both campaigns as they vie for the presidency.
